Sorry to bother the whole bandwidth and this is certainly
'off topic' with regard to the current 'run-amok-plants'
thread ;-)
For those of you who have missed seeing my photo splashed
over the front page of Tuesday's Montclarion newspaper, I'd
like to announce a work party on December 19th in Oakland's
Lakeside Park Garden Center (as if all of you don't have
enough to do during this holiday month!!). The aim of the
morning (8:30-noon) is to work on restoring the 30yr-old
succulent garden, originally created by the local C&S Society
who will also be on hand to help. This is the current
stanza of an excruciatingly slow crescendo which will result
in a new garden demonstrating the diversity and beauty of
succulent plant material. My redesigning of the plantings
follow aesthetic sensibilities rather a showcase museum of
obscure esoteric specimens. When all is said and done, you
may be amazed at what variety can be had in one small plot.
I have been working with this project for a number of years
now and it seems like we'll finally pull it off soon. There
are many players involved and lots of donations from other,
more famous succulent gardens in our area. Now, with a recently
secured donation of badly needed new soil, the planting can
start to take place.
Whether or not you are interested in succulent plants, you
might enjoy participating to help push things along. You might
also find a chance to become reacquainted with the old display
garden at Lake Merritt, some of which are being renovated. I
have my own ideas for further projects after this succulent garden
reaches some sort of stasis, including the possibility of a
display of mediterranean climate plants worthy of trial in our
local area.
Hope you can come by and lend a hand,
regards,
Sean O.
