Re: What is it?


If this garden was in California, Oregon or Washington in the 1930s or
40s, my guess would be a blue mop-head hydrangea (Hydrangea
macrophylla). This was one of the most popular doorway plants of that
era. However, if that garden was in Southern California, where the soil
is alkaline instead of acidic, the color would have been pink instead of
blue, no matter how many rusty nails were deposited under it!
