The pines you describe are probably Knobcone Pine, Pinus attenuata. The only
other native pine that comes close in appearance is Digger Pine, Pinus
sabiniana, and I believe it only grows on the eastern slopes of the coast
range. Knobcone Pine forms natural hybrids (Pinus X attenuradiata) with
Monterey Pine in the vicinity of Ano Nuevo Point and near Waddel Creek in
northern Santa Cruz country.
