An easy way to tell if the pines in question are Knobcone Pine or Digger Pine
is by observing the cones.  Those of the Knobcone Pine are usually less than
15 cm. long, narrowly ovoid, and sharply recurved, while those of the Digger
pine are much larger, usually at least 20 cm. long, broadly ovoid, and more
symmetrical.  (Source:  Flora of the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, by
John Hunter Thomas)  If you get a chance to visit them again, take along a
ruler!
