Re: Flora of New Zealand

Rod wrote a fascinating expose on the unique 'closed world' of NZ
flora and fauna:

>They have the only meat eating parrot
>in the world, a lovely bird I'm sure Tony and Moira could expand on.

Momentarily wildly off topic, but I for one would be interested to
hear some local in-knowledge about the Kea - probably best by private
mail, so as not to upset the existing thread.

I heard that a government logging company had released a proposal to
log out 98,000 hectares of highly sensitive, ancient beech rain forest
in W. New Zealand. Many 'interfering outsiders' (myself included),
lodged a storm of protest at this threat of environmental vandalism.
Such areas are so rare in this modern world of ours and are the
heirloom of all of mankind and not the sole property of any one
country.

I've not heard of anything since, has a decision been reached?
