Someone (Sean?) in the last couple of days was asking for speculative
identifications for a new "fern leafed" vine he'd come upon at a local (bay
area?) nursery. Your description would fit Clematis cirrhosa var.
balearica. If that is indeed what it is, it is very mediterranean in origin
and should do pretty well in the bay area. I know chalk hill propagates and
sells it through vintage gardens in Sebastopol - it's listed in their
current catalogue. Wouldn't surprise me if it's made it down to the bay.
