I often rely on Botanica which is a huge volume that I picked up for a mere $35 at Costco. ONe of our members, the illustrious Ernie of "sluggo" fame is one of the editors. It has great photos and I believe there is an on-line version.
For more specialized medit plants, I like Heidi Geldemeister's Mediterranean Gardening, it's a wonderful book. Whatever you get, I suggest you order it through the mediterranean gardening website so that your order supports the website
I also do tons of web browsing to find photots of the plants people are talking about. WWW.backyardgardener.com has a collection of search engines for plant finding, my favorites are www.northernlight.com, hotbot.com, and www.askjeeves.com,
Good luck!
