Nurseries in Texas for Larry

For your Dallas/San Antonio/Houston trip:
1. Peckerwood Gardens/Yucca Do Nursery near Hempstead, Texas & Houston
may be best Texas has to offer. Some 40 species of Salvias. Historic
collections of new species from Mexico introduced by owners.
2. San Antonio Botanical Garden. Greenhouse architecture and energetic
collection. Unusual papayas, gingers, Texas natives
3. Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens - 5 minutes north of Houston
Intercontinental Airport in the "piney woods" of East Texas. I liked it
in the summer heat but suspect it won't be much to see in Winter
(gingers, etc. will be taken inside)
4. Fort Worth Botanic Gardens. Large begonia species collection.
5. Barton Springs Nursery, 301 Bee Caves Road, Austin, (believe owner
is brother of owner of Antique Rose Emporium?) Good for Central Texas
natives.
6. Schulz Nursery, Marion, Texas. 10 miles from New Braunfels so not
much out of your way if traveling to San Antonio by car. Big, busy,
with interesting plants
7. Antique Rose Emporium, Brenham, Texas. Haven't been there but only
because Brenham is out of the way and it may be for you too.
8. Anderson Nursery in Houston (daughter of Lynn Lowrey, deceased famous
Texas native plants horticulturist).
9. Teas Nursery, Bellaire Blvd., Houston. Very old and famous, now in
decline but if you are near, worth a stop.
10. National Wildflower Research Center & Gardens in Austin. Lady Bird
Johnson.
Houston also has interesting specialty nurseries - such as for bananas,
plumerias, cannas, day lilies, etc.
As you may guess, I spend more time in Houston and San Antonio/Austin
than Dallas.
