In northern Japan, the persimmons are strung along the eaves of the
farmhouses when they ripen in the late fall. Japanese winters are sunny
and cold, all the grass is brown, like ours in the summer, and fruits and
vegetables dry better outdoors than they do here in the summer. Some are
spread beside the roads to put them in the sun. I even saw a bicycle with
vegetables hung all along the handlebars - it would be wheeled into the sun
during the day.
