Nan Sterman: I have had a plant of L. pardalinum (pitkinense) growing in
progressively larger pots for about three years now. I know what Trevor
means about its growth habit, but it seems to grow well in pots in spite of
this. As I recall it had about thirty flowers on two or three stalks this
year. During the growing season I place it in about the same light
conditions as those in which a Cymbidium might do well, and it gets watered
once or twice a week by overspray from the lawn spinklers.
From all I've read I
think Trevor is right on the general habitat requirements, and I intend to
attempt to establish some of the offsets from my plant streamside at a
location about an hour from here at 2500 feet elevation where I also garden.
But since you mentioned you bought two plants, you might consider growing
one on in pots. Certainly if you have heavy soil or questionable drainage,
pots would preferable. Most of the native habitats for L. pardalinum don't
get quite as hot as it does here in the central valley, but the variety I'm
growing doesn't seem to be bothered at all by high temps and low humidities.
Yours most respectfully,
Michael Larmer
