my eyebrows shot up when I saw your note! It is the first reference I have seen
to them on this list, since:
They appeared in my garden suddenly about 4 years ago, and since they were
foreign to me, I posted a query on this news group and someone (from England -
Tristan, perhaps?) pointed me (I spent hours in the library pouring over
books) towards identifying them (small 1/2 to 1 inch long, shiny, black, skinny -rather
like a small, black skinny slug!). Since I could never determine how they appeared
so suddenly, my only conclusion, was that possibly it had come from some horse
manure I had acquired from a friend and added to my compost, but now, I am
wondering if they came from a plant I bought??? Last year, we had less than our
average annual rainfall (about half of our average 80 inches a year) and I thought
they had disappeared, but they are still here. Yes, I smush everyone I can, and I see
them hangin around with the slugs, so assumed they co-exist together (of course,
either breed all eat the smushed ones of each other). I have LOTS of earthworms, I
haven't noticed any less, but am frightened to hear that they are in jeopardy! If you
know of information, or any urls with more info on them, I would be most appreciative
to learn more.
thanks, Maura
