Interested to hear what Dave Poole had to say about Yucca elephantipes
since, about 4 years ago, I bought a small potted specimen of a variegated
Y.elephantipes. This was in Richard Darlow's garden in Yorkshire, which is
well worth visiting, not only for its collection of plants, but also to see
which plants will survive winters in darkest Barnsley, far, far away from any
maritime influences. The Yucca has grown slowly but steadily & is now about
a foot across and slightly less tall. It sounds to me that it would grow much
faster in the ground? It has been outside all this time, and is currently in
a pot that is, what, 8inches? This is probably what's restricting its growth,
although I would assume that, like many plants, the variegated forms are
slower-growing than the plain.
