fertilizing roses

I've avoided using synthetic chemical fertilizers for my
roses until now but I'd like to get more bloom from them
throughout the season (in Berkeley). Is it possible to
achieve this with more natural stuff like alfalfa meal etc.?
Most of the rose experts recommend things with ratios like
10-10-10 etc.
