Almost certainly I should goess it has acquired a virus and will tend to
get worse rather than better with time.

It has been found in recent times the symptoms of some plant viruses 
may be masked when growing conditions are extra-good (as with a rose
early in the season) and this is what could be the story with your
plant.

My inclination would be to say goodbye to this old friend, as there is
always the psossibility it msy pass its infection on to its fellows.
