re: roses

I'd say by these replies it's not just me that has found spraying to be a
chore that can be skipped! Thank you all for the info. That does it, now not
only am I not going to spray, I'm not going to feel guilty about it! :-)
Chantal - yes, I would be interested in knowing which varieties in
particular are disease resistant. Thank you very much. CK

hi all,
As I am an organic grower and also a lazy one (I'm fed up with spraying) I
never spray my plants with chemicals. I only choose good old roses that have
been proved to be resistant.
I have been growing :
Phillis Bide
Ghislaine de Feligonde
Blanc Double de Coubert (rugosa)
Rose de Rescht
without any problem at all; I'm too growing an understorey of allium which I
have from seedlists :
allium senescens,or the chinese edible one and others ones as they are aphid
repellent so, I never have any aphid on my roses; perhaps too it's helping
for no transmitting any desease .
I suppose it's the same thing for Ronni who's growing lavenders and
geraniums, all these plants beeing perfumed are aphid repellents.
I'm sorry but I don't know what is the 'shovel pruning', is it the same
thing than the bowl shape pruning?
I can give a list of good old desease resistant roses to this forum if
somebody is interested.

For over 40 years I have not sprayed my 400+ roses. When avid rose growers
visit my garden and find no blackspot, rust, and maybe a little mildew, they
won't believe I do not spray. You need to let your garden "settle down" for
a few years with no spray. And then nature takes over. Truly.

Regarding the question of not spraying roses, I'm with Cyndi's experience. I
don't buy the
ones whose descriptions include phrases like "martyr to black spot," but
that's the only
special consideration my roses get in Berkeley. If there's too much rust or
black spot,
I'll pull the affected leaves off. I'm guessing Cyndi is right that our
climate and soil
are favorable for healthy growth.
