Here's my attempt to turn this back into a true
"Mediterranean" forum...
Does anyone grow roses native to the Mediterranean
climates of the world?
I've grown Rosa californica and R. gymnocarpa.
Certainly nothing spectacular but interesting.
About 5 other species are native to California. I've
also noticed that two European (including
Mediterranean Basin) species have naturalized in parts
of California; R. eglanteria and R. canina seem to
have taken a liking to some of our climates. Both
have had their genes put into some more contemporary
hybrids.
Some of the other Mediterranean natives include R.
sempervirens, R. pimpinellifolia (sometimes cultivated
and possibly in some earlier hybrids), and R.
glutinosa. There's a couple more species (at least)
but I don't think they're anything much.
R. phoenicia is a beautiful climber native to the
eastern Mediterranean. It's one of the likely parents
of the original Damask Rose.
>From what I've read, there are no roses native to the
Cape of South Africa, SW Australia, or Chile (or any
other part of the Southern Hemisphere).
It seems to me that quite some time ago, a member of
this forum posted some news about the work he (and
others?) was doing on hybridizing California roses.
Anybody know about that?

the Med culture just ain't here yet.
