Hello David,
Glad to hear that London wasn't washed away with all
your rain this winter. We're still at about half our
average rainfall to date. -8C/17F sounds pretty cold
to us here, and that is far colder than we get here in
the San Francisco Bay Area near the water, where it
got down to -5C/24F in my garden in our bad 1990
winter freeze. I was under the impression that this
winter has not been kind to mediterannean and
subtropical gardens in England. I wouldn't have
thought that Fremontodendron, Ceanothus and
Callistemons would come throught those cold
temperatures without some fairly major damage. We
sometimes have the same problems with rot, and in my
garden it is mostly with Mexican and South African
succulents, although I sometimes lose the more tender
bromeliads to rot as well. I am looking at some
Echeverias and Cotyledons which are staying too wet,
and I've lost Agaves and Aloes in other wet winters.
If I had more sun, and some slopes or rock outcrops to
work with, I wouldn't need to worry.
Good luck with your bulbs, and an early spring!
