hey richard,
I'm assuming you mean next time, because it's way too late for
that now. And anyway, I don't have a lawn or a lawnmower. These oak leaves
are really in far too late a stage of decomposition to do that now, plus
I'd kill all my new worms! Thanks for the tip and the sympathy though.
One feels a little bit nuts (so to speak) sitting out and hand sifting.
Yes, that tap root comes quick and deep, the whole thing is just amazing.
Such aggressive reproduction makes one wonder, again, what is the point?
I mean, Nature's point. Am I missing something here?
In the area where I live, Oaks and Bays rule. The Bays are capable
of 8 -10 ft a year growth, especially if it's where you've made a cut.
Next fall I will make sure that the acorns don't get into the compost,
or the flower beds. I tend to "play" with the soil through the winter,
doing a little hand tilling to mix it up and keep it from forming dense
huge clumps of clay, thus mixing in any leaf mixture that sits on top,
(including acorns), and making things worse, probably by doing so. When
I was sifting the leaves yesterday, what I noticed was the acorns
had worked their way to the bottom of the mulch, down to the soil level,
and in CLUMPS! had started sprouting, some tap roots down 8 -10 inches.
A genuine mess.
thanks again though, it's good to know i'm not the only one going through
this vexing problem. My neighbors don't seem as troubled by them, and I
wonder why?
