Thanks to all who responded to my cry of help
regarding processionary caterpillars.
Following Jilly Bennett's advice I
asked a local sanglier (wild boar) hunter to use the nests as target
practice. He arrived with his 12 bore shot gun and proceeded to either
blast the nests to smithereens or put a large hole in them. Apparently the
large hole causes the nest to die and if this happens the nest will turn
brown.
Unfortunately some of the nests were so high that
the shot gun would have been unable to punch a large enough hole in them to be
effective so we shall no doubt see the contents of these nests nose to tail
later in the spring.
