Dear Gunnar and Greek Medit Planters,
There is a very good nursery on Crete that sells pear and other fruit
trees...."Kakoyannakis" in Sfakaki, east of Rethimno and off the national
road (signs point the way.) He has several greenhouses with plants and
trees of all types and sizes-a spotless facility where the plants are
tenderly cared for-a rarity! Very reasonable prices, too. I asked him once
if he shipped off the island, and he said he has enough trade with the local
hotel industry and community landscaping demands. But it's definitely worth
a call/trip for you if he has something in stock that could suit your needs.
I did get two pears from him that fruited last year for the first time-a
miracle, since I'm not there 10 months of the year to tend to their needs.
I cannot tell you the varieties, altho they are known by Greek names.
Sorry, I don't have his number, but I'm sure you can find it in the book.
Best wishes,
Karen V. in Athens
