Has anyone tried Calycanthus occidentalis in wet clay?

It was happy in my previous garden, which was clay and wet all winter but with decent drainage. Dare I try it in my new garden, where the water table is 17 feet down but the clay drains VERY slowly (i.e. stranding water for a day or 2 after every rain -- which hereabouts means 2 days out of every 6)? It's currently in a huge tub, waiting.
Thanks so much,
-- S.
