We grow Calycanthus occidentalis on a clay slope that is very wet all winter as it is near a pond inlet. It gets some water in the summer as well. I know several other gardeners that also grow it in clay. Our clay here is red, not grey gumbo. This would probably make a huge difference.
On another note, if there are any list readers in the Napa County, California area, I am going to be giving a talk on "Rock Gardening in a Mediterranean Climate" this week at the Calistoga Fairgrounds. Thursday February 10th, 2:00.
This is a meeting of the Calistoga Garden Club, but the coordinator has said interested members of the public could attend as well. I present a slide show and typically have about 30-40 species of medit rock garden plants for sale.
