I've had a couple of plants of Tupidanthus calyptratus
go through some fairly cold winters here with no die
off of the main stem. The leaves burn and drop a few
degrees below 30F (mostly due to frost damage) but
they grow out of it relatively quickly, even in our
foggy, cool climate.

There's several tree sized ones on the north side of
the Mariott in Monterey which look good, and unlike
Schefflera actinophylla, the leaflets are much more
elegant, without the in my opinion ugly serrated leaf
tips.

I really like these plants, and they also have a very
cool habit of being cauliflorous, which means they
flower along their trunks, rather than at the branch
tips like Schefflera do. They're also really easy to
root as well.

I've found them to be pretty cheap here, one nursery
was selling a 6 foot tall specimen in a 5 gallon pot
for less than $20.00 USD.
