How bout something different like camellias as a hedge?

While we're on the subject of hedges for 8-10 feet-
I have my most important clients--my parents!!--in Sacramento.
They have a fence-line in the back that I need to hedge, and I am
having some difficulty thinking up what would do it in the shade--
one idea is mixing some tall camellias (they do great in
Sacramento, and some are already there) with something filmier,
like a Pittosporum silver sheen--but it may be too dark for the
Pitt--I have planted them in partial shade but they seem to do
better with more sun. I could do Podocarpus gracilior but I'm not
in love with that look (seen it in too many restaurant parking lots
maybe?)
The situation is winter shade and Summer partial sun. It gets
colder up there in the winter (than LA where I am) and hot hot hot
in the Summer.
I would be so grateful for any thoughts. Either for one particular
plant or mixes.
