Not to beat a dead horse, but . . .
Ben - I agree that a Redwood in your part of the state would not be
particularly happy, so it is worthwhile to consider something else (a stunted
tree may be the right size, but it remains 'stunted').
Since there was such talk about Redwood cultivars, I thought I'd weight in on
two unusual cultivars I know (which don't seem to have been mentioned):
Sequoia sempervirens 'Loma Prieta Spike'
an unusual columnar clone that grows about 4 feet wide and 20+ feet tall
(depending upon site and climate).

Sequoia sempervirens 'Nana Pendula' or 'Prostrata'
Seems to grow only horizontally (1-3ft tall with a much wide spread), giving
the distinctive Redwood foliage but inexplicable habit (stump your friends!);
occasionally throws a vertical shoot which should be promptly removed.
