[Fwd: Re: Bark beetle? in Pines]

Dear Pamela,

I don't have direct experience of this but a couple of years ago I had some serious insect infestation of some sort at the base of a white poplar - large bore holes and a lot of bark peeling off.  I showed the problem to a French friend of mine who has spent many years in horticulture and he advised putting the mega nasty stuff that one usually uses to treat beams in roofs etc with (Xylophene) into a small sprayer and squirting liberally. It seemed a bit drastic but I went along with it; the poplar is alive and well, the bark is growing back over the damaged portion and there has been no further evidence of the problem!

Kind regards,

On close inspection of 2 of our Pinus halepensis I can see evidence of what appears to be the holes of a bark beetle.  The white resin is exuding from some small holes on the trunk.  I have found some information on the internet from the University of California and it doesn't look good news for me.  I am not 100% sure  is a bark beetle but the diagrams of the damage seem to fit.  Has anyone had experience of this problem, any advice or information would be very much appreciated.
