What a lovely set of photos, Nancy! I’m excited to let the group know that my new planting plan for the Gamble Garden mediterranean beds in Palo Alto is finally getting installed this winter (I tried to convince them to plant in fall, but we didn’t get the official OK until December and they want it in by spring tour). There are four beds, and each bed is to be planted with plants from one of the mediterranean climate areas (excluding California—we have a native CA garden already). For the most part, I’m using the plants listed on this page: http://www.wr-architect.com/temp/medbedplants.html Finding out information about plants from the different regions has been enlightening. I found these websites invaluable for research: http://florabase.dec.wa.gov.au/ Oddly enough, the hardest area to research was the Mediterranean Basin itself, because it has been populated for so long. It was very hard to figure out what would grow in the shade of the existing California live oaks that was Mediterranean in origin (other than Helleborus argutifolius and H. x sternii). I’ll be sure to share updates as the project, um, progresses!
