Sean,
Not all groups have declined.
PBS (Pacific Bulb Society) and Trillium-L are very active. Lilium@yahoogroups.com is totally frenetic during the season, but only moderately so in winter (22 messages this December, 9 in January). Both the lily and trillium groups allow photos, and they are fantastic.
The Scottish Rock Garden Club Forum is extremely active. It allows non-members to read almost everything and this encourages new members. There is also a forum moderator who is active on all the many threads - I don't know when Maggi sleeps. Active! I was at a game reserve in Namibia and the owner didn't know the name of one of her native plants. I sent a photo to the forum and had the identity for her within minutes from an Australian member.
As a contrast, the Medit website forum only shows its messages once you've signed up - no encouragement to join, so I haven't bothered.
