Not all groups have declined.

PBS  (Pacific Bulb Society) and Trillium-L are very active. Lilium@yahoogroups.com is totally frenetic during the season, but only moderately so in winter (22 messages this December, 9 in January).  Both the lily and trillium groups allow photos, and they are fantastic.

The Scottish Rock Garden Club Forum is extremely active.  It allows non-members to read almost everything and this encourages new members. There is also a forum moderator who is active on all the many threads - I don't know when Maggi sleeps.  Active!  I was at a game reserve in Namibia and the owner didn't know the name of one of her native plants.  I sent a photo to the forum and had the identity for her within minutes from an Australian member.  

 As a contrast, the Medit website forum only shows its messages once you've signed up - no encouragement  to join, so I haven't bothered.
