Hello all
There is a sort of chicken-and-egg effect here. Activity generates more activity. However, the format can determine how much activity there is in the first place, how easy do contributors find it to create messages or reply to them. So it is a bit of a conundrum whether we all need to use the list more regularly or whether it has outlived its usefulness in its current format. The Listserv model has mostly been replaced by more interactive web applications (speaking for non-academic/specialist circles).
I suspect that revitalising this list, or resurrecting a similar list in future, is a question initially of finding the right web technology and format. But that is a whole other ball game -- and likely to be a question of finding (and, presumably, paying for) the right expertise... (I don't use Facebook or other 'free' social media, so can't comment on whether those might work.)
For myself, I have learned far far more from this list than I as a novice can hope to contribute. So thank you all for that, and a big thank you to Sean for keeping this list going for so long. I completely that it takes time, energy and emotion to run, and cannot gainsay you for wishing to let it go given the low amount of activity (mea culpa also, of course).
As Joni Mitchell sings, 'you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone'! I was very happy to see the link to the archives, which I have saved for future learning.
Happy gardening everyone.
S.

So lovely to see familiar names. I hope this finds everyone in great health and spirits.
I learned from your messages and enjoyed reading about your projects and travels. But(!) list management is a labor of love and I fully understand if it is time to let it go.
Thanks for all you have done for us, Sean.

Hello folks -
Looks like there are just under 300 people still subscribed to this
inactive list. Many of you may have forgotten that you were actually
subscribed to this group since there has been no activity for some time.
I am considering closing the list permanently. If you have no issue with
this decision, you need not respond.
If, for some reason, you think the list should remain, let me know why.

Can we try it again for a while so that a simple "Reply" will be sent to the

Dear Sean
Thank you for writing. I seem to have less and less time to look at this
sort of blog nowadays. I wonder why it is and suspect it's because I am
doing everything more slowly but there is still so much to do each day!
Looking at the blog just now I was fascinated by the Angioplasty item,
delighted to see the praise you received for the 2008 Monterey logo (I also
loved that design and still have my bag), and it's all very interesting.
But it's up to you whether you keep it open. I'd have thought I would go
back to it again if it remains, but it's your creation and if it makes work
or costs you money then don't bother if there is no activity.
If you are interested do have a look at Mediterranean Plants and Gardens
website. www.medpag.org
Thank you again for asking everyone.
All the best

What was the reason for changing to reply to individual only? Was it a
preference of the group at the time? Or something to do with the listserv?
It seems to me that everyone now-a-days are used to groups to which the
messages go to the whole group. Perhaps if that were changed (if possible) the
group might take off again.
On the other hand, these kinds of groups seems to losing some of their oomph.
I read just the other day that the huge IMDb (International Movie Database) is
removing its message boards, citing that readership on them is way down yet FB
and other social media use is more lively.

Diane -
I know what you mean.
I also believe that the group declined for other reasons as well. This has
also been true for various e-mail forums of various topics. UC Davis has
confirmed for me that overall listserv traffic has been decreasing over the
years.
Personally, it does not seem worth trying to keep Medit-Plants alive. It
had a good run - as shown in the archives saved on Hort.net (if anyone is
unaware of this archive, check it out -
https://www.hort.net/lists/medit-plants/).
Perhaps hardest for me, as creator of the group, but there you are.

It was done to use because of a change in the listserv service at UC
Davis. Under that old listserv protocol (now upgraded to another), there
were reason why 'reply-all' was problematic as I recall. I have not looked
at how to change the group to 'reply-all' under the new listserv.

I’ve been a member for many years and would love to see the list become more
active again. I rarely use FB because I find it too distracting and I agree
that it is mostly just nice pictures. The listserv is a much better way to
have in-depth discussions. Is there another place for good discussions if the
listserv is discontinued?

I was on this list for years and met some fantastic people like Heidi
Gildemeister but maybe it is no longer viable, Sean.

Diane -
I know what you mean.
I also believe that the group declined for other reasons as well.
This has also been true for various e-mail forums of various topics.
UC Davis has confirmed for me that overall listserv traffic has been
decreasing over the years.
Personally, it does not seem worth trying to keep Medit-Plants
alive. It had a good run - as shown in the archives saved on
Hort.net (if anyone is unaware of this archive, check it out -
https://www.hort.net/lists/medit-plants/ [1]).
Perhaps hardest for me, as creator of the group, but there you are.

I had to remember to "Reply All" so this message could get to
everybody, but very few people seemed to know about "Reply All", so
lively discussions ceased.
Can we try it again for a while so that a simple "Reply" will be sent
to the whole list?

Sean,
Not all groups have declined.
PBS (Pacific Bulb Society) and Trillium-L are very active.
Lilium@yahoogroups.com is totally frenetic during the season, but only
moderately so in winter (22 messages this December, 9 in January). Both the
lily and trillium groups allow photos, and they are fantastic.
The Scottish Rock Garden Club Forum is extremely active. It allows non-
members to read almost everything and this encourages new members. There is
also a forum moderator who is active on all the many threads - I don't know
when Maggi sleeps. Active! I was at a game reserve in Namibia and the owner
didn't know the name of one of her native plants. I sent a photo to the forum
and had the identity for her within minutes from an Australian member.
As a contrast, the Medit website forum only shows its messages once you've
signed up - no encouragement to join, so I haven't bothered.

The MGS Forum (http://www.mgsforum.org/smf/index.php) has some activity but
not very much lately.
I personally love the PBS bulb list. Have learned lots about geophytes and
tips on South Africa travel. :-)
Cheers,
Bracey

I started a tropical hibiscus mail list in 1996 -- ran it initially on
freeware on a Mac on a dial-up line. Moved to Yahoo groups in 2001 because
some ISPs barred e-mail for some odd reasons. In message quantity, the mail
list hit its peak in Nov. 2010 with 2250 messages, and this past November, the
message count was 4. In December of 2016, volume rose to 17 messages. I lay
most of the blame on Facebook.
Seems to me that it's a list-killer if it's not automatically reply-to-all.
