Yes, Lavandula x allardii (Lavandula dentata x Lavandula latifolia) is
great.
Beautiful strongly scented silver grey leaf, curiously toothed, sometimes
on one side, some times on both, or not at all.
Very quick growth. The plant can reach one meter high in the first two
years' growth. It is hardy to about -10 ° C.
The long spikes have grey blue flowers, very scented. The plant flowers
from may to october (Lavandula dentata flowers almost all year long).
As with Lavandula dentata, you can cut back hard, it shoots back right from
the old wood, which is not true for the usual Lavandula cultivars.
Lavandula x allardii is not too hard to find in England and France.
Try also Lavandula 'Devantville' (Lavandula dentata x Lavandula
angustifolia), which is quite similar but hardier.
And Nan, if you look for really dark flowers, look for these : Lavandula
lanata (very dark purple, wooly white foliage), Lavandula 'Sawyers' and
Lavandula 'Richard Gray' (which ar both L. angustifolia x L.
lanata). These are rather slow growers. If your winters are not too cold,
very beautiful are Lavandula multifida (finely divided foliage), with
strong blue flowers, and Lavandula pinnata (nice too, but the foliage
stinks, which is strange for a lavender !)
A strong grower too (1 meter) and most incredible is Lavandula minutolii :
imagine a Lavender with a foliage like a Senecio vira-vira !
Medium hight, dark flowers : Lavandula x intermedia 'Grosso' (used for
perfume industry in Provence) and Lavandula x intermedia 'Arabian Nights'.
Also dark flowers but these are dwarf : Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote
Blue', Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead Dwarf', and the species, Lavandula
angustifolia, which is native in the Provence Alps.
Now, if you want to make a normal lavender look darker, plant nearby a
white form (Lavandula x intermedia 'Alba') or a light pink (Lavandula
angustifolia 'Loddon Pink').
