Re: california plants

I imagine most of the Bay-area members of this list are familiar with the
Tilden Botanic Garden in Berkeley. This is an all-California garden with
over 1000 species represented.

While I know it mostly in spring [March-early May], to my northerner's
eyes, this area is stunning!

There are certainly many, many plants that hold their own with those from
any continent. In addition to the many ceanothus mentioned, how about
fremontodendron, and the shrubby mimulus, now available in a rainbow of
colors?

I do grow a few of the hardier Californian shrubs: a Ceanothus impressus
hybrid [now coming into bloom] and my pride and joy, Carpenteria
californica. And if bush-poppies [Dendromecon spp] were possible here, I
would cry...

Anyone interested in pursuing this subject should get a copy of Marjorie
Schmidt's GROWING CALIFORNIA NATIVE PLANTS.
