Then there's Acer pentephyllum ...I bought one at Western Hills Nursery in
California and was bringing it home in the back of my stationwagon. I
received smiles and nods from everyone, and on the Richmond-San Rafael
bridge lots of honks and greetings.

It is a stunning tree with beautiful foliage and pretty tough too -
as far as sun and heat and drought goes. Mine, about 20 years old is
approx. 10m tall and 15 broad. Autumn colour isn't much - tho' I
believe there are now selected autumn colour strains which are pretty
good. It self seeds - not heavily - in my garden. I could save seed
if anyone is interested.
