I've seen them on the coasts of Greece and Crete, where they are always in
deep sand above the hight water mark, although that's a bit of a mis-nomer
in the practically tideless Mediterranean. I expect they get a bit of
saltwater washed over them during storms when the wind is blowing off the
sea and waves are sweeping up the beaches. I've never seen them growing
among rocks, so you'd need to create sandy hollows. Actually, the roots
most probably go down to clayey soil undelying the sand, which may be
about 2 feet down. Otherwise I can't see how they'd get enough nutrient
from pure sand. I did once see Pancratium growing on a sandy beach near
Santander on the Atlantic N. coast of Spain, where they likely received
more sea spray, although the Atlantic is less salty than the Med.
