Sean,
Your winter garden description hightlighted two plants that have been on my
mind recently. You mention Roldana petasitis (formerly Senecio petasitis) with
its beautiful yellow flowers. Are these available in the nursery trade
locally? I wasn't aware of the name change, and have been trying to find a
commercial source without success (though I must admit I haven't pursued this
very far as yet). I "discovered" a semi-abandoned patch of this plant in my
father's Southern California garden recently, and brought some cuttings up to
the Bay Area where they seem to thrive in the cool, filtered sun of my back
yard. Amazingly, despite their tropical looking foliage, the recent freeze
scarcely affected them. I would like to recommend them for an inland Bay Area
garden (Pleasant Hill) and am encouraged by their seeming frost-hardiness.
You also mentioned Westingia 'Wynabbie Gem' with its lilac flowers. Is this
the only Westringia with flowers that are not white ? I am looking for a
Westringia variety that stays on the small side (under four feet) but the only
specimen I've seen that sported pinkish-blue flowers is five feet and growing!
Regards, Ted
