My earlier suggestion about Lasthenia was not entirely in jest, but a
philosopher friend has since advised me that Plato made a fleeting
reference in his Symposium to two women philosophers of an earlier day:
Lasthenia of Mantinea and Axiothea of Phlius of whom nothing further is
known save they both wore men's clothing whilst teaching.
Is there a plant genus honouring Axiothea? I see none in Hortus III or
Exotica.
Warm regards,
William Glover
