Yes, and watch out if a brit wants to borrow your eraser, he'll ask for 
a rubber. :)

But beyond this - I think it's important to look to what the person is 
trying to say, not what one could extrapolate from it.  A gentle 
reminder that a word might be offensive is enough.  But when people jump 
on each other, taking offense where none was intended, it trivializes 
the discussion, and you start feeling like someone trying to enjoy 
dinner and being told that every fork you choose is the wrong one.
