Bob -
An Irish friend who insists on growing Hostas in our area uses the shedded
redwood mulch commonly called 'gorilla hair' with great success. It is
so wiry, coarse, and dry, they beasties do not seem capible of crossing it.

Iris japonica seems to be a true gormet treat for mollusks - I have the
variegated form in my garden, which is very small and NEVER flowers :-( due
to the constant ravages by slug and snail! I should try my own advice!
Maybe I'll also try your Liquidamber trick as well (we've got neighbor-
hoods lousy with these sidewalk raising trees, with the fruits gathering in
great drifts causing pedestrian law-suits for home owners too lazy to clean
them up!).
