I can report we used sawed off plastic liter bottles pressed down into the
soil for protection against cutworms. They were inadvertantly quite sharp
edged around the top and did seem to hold back the snails from those
seedlings, though we hadn't expected it. I've seen snails eat cacti flesh
right out from under the spines. Maybe the plants were a bit healthier with
a little protection, so the snails cruised on looking for weaker game. In
any case, it seemed to help.

...Also im testing an inexpensive way to keep snails away from my
seedlings. I cut up a soft drink can and "fringed" the edges, twisting
them so the sharp edge is up, and pushing every other one inside the
can. Its hard to describe, but im hoping it's sharp enough to keep
snails out!
