wild boars in the garden

has any body have wild boars digging up the vegetable patch and does anybody know of a reliable deterrent other than fencing the potager in?
since I have being living here they have visited often but only to take mud baths and rub themselves all over the fig tree.
last night they attacked the vegetable garden and made a real mess.
I suspect that once discovered they will keep coming back
