Re: hedges for very hot areas


Carob hedges were planted by the earliest colonists here in the 
1840's and the hedges are still in good order today - and they look 
excellent being well trimmed and tended by the owners fortunate 
enough to have them. They are not watered or fed to my 
knowledge. Wild olive is also used the same way and is equally as 
successful. Once I suggested to a Greek garden owner that she 
might consider Carobs or olives for formal treatment - hedges and a 
stilt garden were on her agnda. Her landscaper was astonished. 
Both trees have their traditional roles but no one seems to have 
thought outside the square. I never did find out if my suggestion 
was adopted.
