Nursery Manager (Senior Nursery Technician)

This position is located in the Arboretum and is
represented by a union. Working hours are Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday
through Thursday 8-5.
Responsibilities: Manage plant growth facility for the
Davis Arboretum to produce plants for collections, fundraising and
support of academic curricula and
research. Supervise and direct student employees and
volunteers and provide horticultural training. Supervise plant
propagation facility and all nursery operations
including plant inventory and labeling, irrigation,
pest control, weed control, pruning, repotting, container media
production and transfer to work sites. Select and
train student employees, coordinate all work
assignments and scheduling, order materials, purchase equipment and
maintain existing nursery facility. Coordinate
plant sales for fundraising: maintain availability of
plants, transport to site, provide information about plants, irrigate and
groom sales plants on site. Recycle
stock as needed. Assure the use of safe work practices
by all employees and provide training in safe work habits and chemical
handling procedures. Assure
worker compliance with all state and federal
regulations.
Requirements: Knowledge of ornamental plants and the
ability to identify a broad variety of ornamental plants including the
use of Latin names. Knowledge of
the methods and principles behind nursery operations
and extensive knowledge in horticulture or comparable work experience.
Experience with container nursery
operations and knowledge of plant propagation
techniques and horticultural methods. Management skills to lead, direct
and inspire a diverse work force of paid
student employees, interns and volunteers. Knowledge of
pests of ornamental plants and experience in pest management. Pesticide
applicators license
preferred. Ability to use pesticides and supervise and
train others in the use of pesticides. Practical experience in basic
irrigation methods and principles and the
ability to maintain and adjust automatic irrigation
systems. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and
written form with staff, volunteers,
interns and the general public. Familiarity with
computers and ability to use computers for record keeping. Ability to
learn to use a relational database. Ability to
supervise health and safety practices and to direct and
train others in their use. Ability to implement a horticultural training
program for volunteers, interns,
students and the general public. Ability to arrange
plants and create attractive plant displays. Ability to provide
leadership to plant sales team and develop and
manage a plant sales program. Conditions of Employment:
Work flexible schedule to include weekends, Tuesday through Saturday or
Sunday through
Thursday with occasional weekends. Obtain Pesticide
Application License within 12 months of employment.
