This doesn't sound like anything that normally happens with oxalis, unless
he has an extreme allergy to it. Of course the same thing could happen with
peanuts or shrimp in someone else. What it *does* sound like is something
that would happen if he got a piece of some aroid - do you have any arums,
callas, caladiums, arisaemas, or other related plants in the area? Those
plants have calcium oxylate crystals throughout their tissues which when
eaten uncooked, produce exactly the kind of symptoms you describe. Almost
immediate stinging pain and swelling. Taro will do it if you try and eat it
raw, too.
