Barry,
One of the local California shrubs that attracts swallowtails is the Coffee
Berry (Rhamnus sp.). There is a lake basin called Lake Pillsbury in
Northern California that is often full of thousands of these beautiful
butterflies. I could not figure out why. The basin is also full of a
particularly lovely specied of Rhamnus. As I began to do research on
cultivating the Rhamnus, I discovered that they are famous for being a food
source for swallowtails.
I am very excited this week because my stratified Rhamnus seeds from this
very location have begun to sprout!!
