Liz,
Rather than try to grow from a stone get some cuttings and
graft them on to a rootstock, even better graft onto
a commercially purchased tree with a few other varieties
on it. I once had a triple grafted peach and each variety
came on at a different time, bliss!
Grafting is pretty easy, there are heaps of texts that show how
and plenty of poeple on this list who can offer help.
If you want 'that peach' go for the graft
