One thing we may be able to enjoy in the future is the use of JPG2000, the
new standard just released (www.aware.com). It is based in part on the
wavelet compression algorithim used for FBI fingerprint records.
Compression can go as high as 1:120, and it is virtually lossless at
compression ratios as high as 1:50. It has a lot of other nice features
that will allow just the size one needs for viewing. The more of the file
you download, the better the resolution.

Companies will develop viewers for the net, and I see an immediate
application to digital cameras. If I am lucky, I will be using it to get
images for UNC Chapel Hill's herbarium.

The other option, currently possible if resources are available, is to
create a second list and site like AlpenPix that serves this function for
the Alpine-L list. Images are sent up to this site, and its manager adds
them to a simple Web page that anyone can access. Members are sent posts to
notify them of an addition.
