Just wanted to follow up on the Gardenia thunbergii
theme, which I guess was a little unclear in my
previous post. Gardenia thunbergii does grow,(if
rather slowly), in cooler maritime mediterranean
climates such as SF Bay Area, but I have never seen it
bloom. Gary Hammer at Desert to Jungle Nursery in
Montebello sells the plant, and it blooms for him in
the much warmer Sunset Zone 23 climate. Then again,
they can grow and bloom trees such as Delonix regia in
his immediate neighborhood, so you can see that they
get much more year round heat.
