The UC Botanical Garden is hiring a full time horticulturist to work in the Mediterranean and Eastern North American Sections of the Garden. This is a full time position listed under the job title of Museum Scientist. The following job description will appear on the UC Berkeley web-site as of 1/17/01.
Duties:
Design, plant, and maintain the Mediterranean and Eastern N. American sections of the Botanical Garden under the supervision of the Head of Collections & Horticulture and the Horticulture Supervisor in accordance with curatorial policies. Maintain plant health, area tidiness, and aesthetic appeal through horticultural maintenance activities. Maintain accurate plant records, labeling, and interpretive information. Assist the Manager of Collections & Horticulture and the Curator in the interpretation of the collection, selection of appropriate plant material, and research of pertinent data. Perform hardscape activities including installation/repair of irrigation systems, resurfacing/grading of paths, building/repairing of rock work, and controlling erosion. Operate garden equipment including pickup truck, go-cart, chipper-shredder, power weed cutter, rototiller, and Honda carry-all. Use chemicals under guidance of licensed staff to control pests as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Horticulture or equivalent experience. Demonstrable knowledge of Mediterranean and Eastern North American flora (scientific names, natural habitats, natural history, and horticultural requirements). Ability to work independently, set and meet objectives, and coordinate objectives with other members of the staff and with Botanical Garden policy. Ability to maintain accurate records and to research collection acquisitions and their horticultural requirements through botanical literature. Ability to perform hard physical labor. Valid CDL
Salary range: $32,048 to $48,179
