Off the subject as this might be I can't help but respond to Richard's dig about "Constantinople."
In Greece, and I assume in Turkey as well, it is general practice (and I'm talking about "scholarly" texts as opposed to propaganda-type journalism) to call the city "Constantinople" in any context referring to pre-twentienth century times, and "Istanbul" in any modern context. The renaming postdated the conquest by many many years.
