Re: Pawlonia tomentosa
Yes Chas, it's a very popular tree here in Australia, largely due to some
very aggressive marketing by a wholesale trade nursery. Also used in
plantations which so far have seen a spectacular failure of investors funds.
It's a useful tree on farms where a very fast growing tree is desired
provided sufficient water can be found.....it's a very thirsty tree.
As an ornamental my personal opinion of it is that it is a complete
non-event.......a tree with no distinction of trunk, form or foliage and a
very brief but comely flowering. I guess in climates too cold for the
Jacaranda it is a possible alternative.
It, like the Tasmanian Blue Gum is one of the few trees I haven't planted
on our farm. I'm aiming for the originality award as being the only farm in
Western Australia without either of them!
Don't forget this is a subjective opinion only!
If you want it you have it......with my blessings. But would you consider
the Tipuana tipu?
Regards,
Margaret.
