Hello all,
I have another wacky question regarding a plant that
is not mediterranean, but was wondering if anyone is
growing this outside Southern California, or in other
cooler maritime Mediterranean climates similar to the
SF Bay Area. After seeing Ipomoea arborescens/Palo
Blanco/White Tree Morning Glory in Oaxaca, Mexico and
again in Orizaba, Vera Cruz, and experiencing
temperatures there,(Orizaba), which were the equal of
our winter lows here in Berkeley(40F at night/50F
during the day in Orizaba), it doesn't seem out of the
realm to consider it as a possibility here. I know it
does pretty well in Southern California, but have
never seen it here in northern California. Anyone
growing this? I suspect that the winter low
temperatures may not be the problem as much as wet,
cold soils in winter, which is opposite to its habitat
in Mexico. The trees were gorgeous in the really
winter dry areas, where it was totally deciduous while
in bloom.
Whereas it bloomed with lush green foliage where well
watered in more wet/subtropical conditions of Orizaba,
Vera Cruz. I bet that this would be a very good
performer in Perth, Australia and Capetown, South
Africa, as well as in warm subtropical deserts such as
Israel and Saudi Arabia...
